Joomla 1.5 Document Linking in an Article

I was asked today how to insert a PDF or Word Doc into a Joomla article. Here is the process if you need it as well. This is a two step process. I am assuming you are already logged into the administration panel.

Step 1: Upload the file you want to link

Choose Site -> Media Manager

Site Media Manager

At the bottom of the Media Manager shown below click Browse (click image to view larger). Once you have selected the document you wish to upload choose Start Upload.

Media Manager

When the file finishes loading, choose Content -> Article Manager from your admin menu.

Content

Either choose an existing article now or create a new article. Type the article and include the name you want displayed for your document. Now highlight the name you type and click the Insert/Edit Link icon as shown below.

Link Buttons

This will pop open a window where you can adjust all the settings for how this link will work. The only mandatory field is the Link URL field. Enter the relative path to the document you uploaded. Typically /images/myfilename.extension. Click Insert to return to your article.

Link URL

Make sure you save your article and you are done.

Please le me know of other topics or questions you need answered and I’ll get to them as I have time.

  1. What do you do with ‘Joomla’? This is the second content-management system I’ve encounterd today, and I must admit I don’t quite understand the concept. Sounds interesting, though.

  2. Joomla has blogs, forums and polls built in so it makes it easy to get a full featured website rather quickly. Of course there are many extensions and templates to make the interface look more professional. This makes it a great tool to build more corporate style websites, 501c4, 501c3, and political campaign websites. The latest one I just installed was for American Majority. The group is adding their content at the moment so it is still rather bare.

  6. After I link to the document and click on the link I get an Object Not Found Error 404. I can’t figure out why it is not working.
